What is prenatal screening (testing during pregnancy)?
During your pregnancy, you can choose to have tests to check whether there are indications that the baby in your womb has a chromosomal condition or a physical abnormality. This is called prenatal screening.
Two types
There are two types of tests:
Screening for chromosomal conditions:
the NIPT (non-invasive prenatal test). This is a blood test.
Screening for physical abnormalities:
the 13-week ultrasound and the 20-week ultrasound.
Counselling appointment
Would you like to know more about these tests? Then we can schedule a counselling appointment. During this conversation, we will look together at what you need to make a choice that suits you. You are also welcome to ask questions.

Prepare for the appointment
Before the appointment, please read information about the screening tests. You can find more information at www.pns.nl for example:
A leaflet about the NIPT, the 13-week ultrasound and the 20-week ultrasound.
A short video about the NIPT and videos about the 13-week and 20-week ultrasounds.
Questionnaires that can help you make a choice.

Whether or not to have screening: the choice is yours
The NIPT, the 13-week ultrasound and the 20-week ultrasound are not mandatory. You decide for yourself whether you want to have one or more of these tests and what you do with the results. You can also stop the screening process at any time.
